Main Challenges:
Rapid Capacity Expansion with Low-Cost Requirements:
Kenya’s rapidly growing population and accelerated urbanization have led to a shortage of existing school facilities, creating an urgent need for low-cost, rapidly constructible educational infrastructure.
Long-Distance Transportation and Site Limitations:
The project site was located in a slum area, making it difficult to transport large equipment and machinery. Additionally, the approximately 9,000-kilometer distance from the manufacturing facility in China necessitated maximizing transportation cost savings.
Simplified Construction and Localized Operations:
The local area lacked professional construction personnel and heavy machinery. A simple, easy-to-install solution was required, along with the ability to train local workers to complete the assembly.
Solutions:
Foldable Container Structure:
The foldable containers featured an innovative “foldable structure” design. After pre-assembly at the factory, the units could be folded for transportation, significantly reducing the number of shipping containers required and lowering international logistics costs.
Minimalist On-Site Installation and Localized Training:
All components were prefabricated at the factory, enabling rapid on-site installation using simple tools and bolted connections.
The installation process required no heavy machinery and relied primarily on manual labor. Local workers from the slum area were successfully trained to complete the main structure assembly, with hoisting work completed within just five working days.
Adaptability and Eco-Friendly Design:
The lightweight structural design minimized foundation requirements, and the installation process generated no construction waste, aligning with environmental sustainability goals.
Product Details:
Structural Material:
High-strength light-gauge steel frames were used to ensure structural stability while keeping the weight light for easy transportation and hoisting.
Wall Panel Material:
Metal embossed sandwich panels (galvanized steel sheets on both sides + insulation core) were employed to provide thermal insulation, fire resistance, and aesthetic appeal.
Foldable Design:
Unique hinge and folding mechanisms allowed the roof and wall panels to be compressed during transportation, reducing the volume to one-third or even smaller compared to the assembled size.
Interior Configuration:
Pre-installed wiring, sockets, and switch interfaces were included. The floors were covered with SPC click-lock flooring, offering wear resistance and moisture protection.
The classroom interiors featured well-organized spaces with excellent natural lighting.
