Ⅰ.project Basic Information
Project Name: “Read & Move” Cultural and Fitness Complex
Project Types: Container Bookstore & Community Gym
Location: Urban renewal plot/Community public space
Core Products: Flat-pack containers (Bookstore), Standard containers (Gym)
Project Scale: Bookstore ~60㎡ (2 combined units), Gym ~100㎡ (4 combined units)
Key Features: Culture-health integration, Rapid deployment, Green & eco-friendly, Community service
Ⅱ.Main Challenges
space vs. Experience Paradox: How to create an open reading environment in the limited container space for the bookstore and sufficient workout space for the gym.
Rapid Deployment Requirement: located in public areas, the construction period needs to be shortened as much as possible to minimize disruption to residents.
Functionality and Aesthetics: The facade and interior design needed to be attractive and become a community landmark while ensuring full functionality.
Environmental Adaptation: Providing comfortable indoor environments with effective insulation for both summer and winter.
III. Solutions
Modular Design & Flexible Layout:
Bookstore: Two flat-pack containers were spliced horizontally in a staggered layout, breaking the conventional boxy feel and creating a design-integrated space. Large sections of side panels were replaced with full-height windows and glass doors, significantly increasing natural light and creating visual connectivity between indoors and outdoors.
Gym: Four standard containers were placed side-by-side with interiors connected to form an open space. A full-view glass wall was installed at one end to reduce oppression and offer views during workouts.
Ultra-Fast Construction Process:
Bookstore: All components (wall panels, roof, doors, windows) were prefabricated and interior-finished in the factory, then packed and transported to the site. On-site work involved only hoisting, positioning, bolt fastening, and seam processing. The main structure was completed within 1-2 days.
Gym: The internal layout of equipment, electrical wiring, wall finishes, and AC systems were pre-installed at the factory. Upon arrival on site, only a concrete base needed to be poured on leveled ground for placement. After connection to external water and electricity, it was ready for use, achieving “plug-and-play”.
Environmental Control System:
Dense rock wool insulation filled the walls for thermal performance.
Split AC systems were pre-installed to ensure a suitable indoor temperature.
The bookstore uses high CRI LED lighting to provide a comfortable reading environment.
